Going, surface, trip
Going describes the ground on turf (e.g. firm, good, soft, heavy) — rain and watering change it. Some horses handle soft; others want a dry, quick surface.
Artificial / all-weather courses (polytrack, tapeta, etc.) are a different surface again. A strong turf animal is not automatically strong on the sand, and vice versa.
Trip means the distance of today’s race relative to what the horse has shown before — stepping up or down in distance can help or hurt.
