Runner, trainer, jockey
Runner — the horse in that race (also called the selection when we name a qualifier).
Trainer — prepares the horse: fitness, targeting of races, often the long-term pattern of where and when it runs. Trainer form (recent winners, course record) is one signal among many — never the whole story.
Jockey — rides the race: pace, position, timing. The same horse can look different under a different rider; jockey/course combinations sometimes matter, sometimes do not.
Owner, draw (starting stall), weight carried, headgear, and days since last run are further inputs. None of them alone “makes” a qualifier.
