Withdrawals, stakes, abstain
A non-runner (NR) is a horse declared for a race that is later withdrawn — before the off, not after the race has started.
What happens to a stake on that horse? On most UK bookmakers and on Betfair exchange, a bet on a non-runner is typically void: your stake is returned (exchange matched bets are cancelled / unsettled as void under market rules). Check your account statement; timing of the declaration can matter for some products.
What about stakes on other horses in the same race? Those bets usually still stand, but the prices may be reduced under Rule 4 when a withdrawn horse had taken significant money. That is a deduction from winnings (or an odds reduction), not a void of your bet.
Our guidance. If a horse we named is a non-runner, abstain — do not move that stake onto another horse of your choice. We advise you stay with the strategy; the final call is yours.
